Junior hurried across camp, toward the warm, well-lit cabin. He shivered a little as he reached the door and brushed snow from his coat. The other kids had seemed so nice, maybe everything was going to work out. He raised a hand to knock, but before he could, the door flew open.
"WHAT DO YOU WANT?" Mr. Torrance screamed.
Junior was more then a little bit taken aback. For a few seconds, he was too stunned to move or speak. "I... I'm cold." He said sofly.
Mr. Torrance sneered at this, and drew himself up threateningly. "WELL OF COURSE YOU'RE COLD, YOU'RE STANDING OUT THERE IN THE SNOW! NOW GET THE HELL BACK TO YOUR CABIN, YOU FOUR-EYED FREAK!" And the door slammed shut.
Junior stared dumbly at the door, tears of rage filling his eyes. That word echoed in his mind... that hateful, evil, horrible word. Freak...
"I'll show you freak" He whispered.
Junior grabbed the doorknob and pulled it open. Mr. Torrance turned around in fury, mouth open. "HEY YOU BRAT, I SAID..." He trailed off. Something in Junior's eyes stopped him.
"I said... I'm cold"
Junior walked into the cabin, glaring coldly at the man before him. Mr. Torrance was paralyzed... those eyes were so green... so very green, not human. "You can't..." He said weakly, but was unable to finish. He was a tough man, never afraid of anything, but something about this pale child sent shivers up his spine.
As Mr. Torrance watched, the child began to change. He didn't even have time to scream. It... the monstrosity... was the most grotesque thing he'd ever seen, even in his worst nightmates, it sickened him. He couldn't remember how to move, how to run, as those slimey tentacles wrapped around his body. He let out a whimper, and then everything went dark.
Mr. Torrance slumped to the floor unconcious. Junior drew back in horror. "What have I done...?"
The full realization of it hit like a knife in the gut. The other kids had not tried to help him, they'd tricked him, even though he'd tried so hard to look and act normal. They still hated him, and now... now he'd hurt someone...
A sob tore from Junior's throat, and he slipped to his knees. For a long time, he kneeled there, sobbing and trembling, holding his gut as if to hold back all the hurt and the guilt. 'I just want a friend...' He thought 'Just one friend... but nobody wants to be friends with a monster or a freak...' And he cried all the harder. The world was cruel, and so were the people in it. It was so lonely...
Junior wanted to go home. He wanted his mom and his dad, who had always been there for him. But they didn't know what he looked like, would they even want him anymore if they did? Surly nobody would want to have a freak for a son either.
After a while, the sobs subsided and Junior sat up. His stomach hurt. Sniffling, he looked over at Mr. Torrance, and felt a stab of fear. What would happen when he woke up?
'Then everyone will know I'm a monster...' Junior thought. It threatened to start another bout of crying, but he fought against it. He just wanted to run and hide away, where nobody would ever find him, but that was just as horrible as everyone finding out the truth. He had to do something.
The plan that formed in Junior's mind made him sick with guilt. He knew he shouldn't, he knew he was horrible as it was, but he was afraid, and there was nothing else he could do. He'd put the same sleeping spell on Mr. Torrance , and bury him in the snow, same as he had the other boy. That way, at least, nobody would get hurt.
The tears froze on Junior's face as he carried out his plan. Nobody looked outside to see, nobody would think anything of the new snowman in the camp, there were tons of them. When he was finished, he stood outside, unsure of what to do next. He looked bitterly toward the camper's cabin, and knew he couldn't bear to go back there, where he'd be teased. So, with a miserable sigh, he crept back into the cousilors cabin and shut the door behind him.
Kira woke with a yelp. "TORRANCE!" She howled "MONSTER!". Her cabin mates stared at her in shock, and a few started to giggle. Realizing what she'd done, she lowered her eyes, hot with embarrassment. Mindy strode over, looking annoyed.
"That's so uncool Kira, like, have some self control."
"Sorry" Kira mumbled.
"Whatever" Mindy rolled her eyes "Why the scream, anyhow?"
"I... I had a nightmare... at least I think I did... I don't remember..."
"Like I said, totally uncool... anyway, get up, something has happened!"
Kira looked around, aware of the uneasy feeling in the cabin for the first time since waking. "What's up?"
Mindy shrugged, scowling a little "Well apparently that uncivilized ape of a counsilor was suppose to wake us up for flag ceremony at 5 in the morning. It's, like, 9 already, and there's no sign of him. The kids from the other school said that he's never a minute late... oh, and that loser from last night is, like, still gone. He never came back. Not that I care, 5 in the morning is so too early, if I don't get my sleep it ruins my complexion, so I think things turned out fine."
Kira nodded, looking around in alarm. The boy really was gone. She listened to the others curiously.
"You think his alarm didn't go off?" A boy asked.
"Alarm" Someone else scoffed "Torrance can tell time in his sleep, he don't need no alarm."
"But thats impossible! Nobody can tell time in their sleep, I bet his alarm broke and thats the reason."
Sperg grinned thoughtfully "Maybe he's too busy punishing the gullible wuss from last night to punish the rest of us." There were a few laughs at this, and a few worried glances.
"Well... what now then?" A girl asked.
"Breakfast is what's now, yoh" Irwin answered "I'm starving, lets go to the mess hall."
And that's just what everyone did. Kira frowned as she went, silently hoping there was a good explanation for all this, especially that kid dissapearing... what was his name? She couldn't recall it.
